Recent Events
The Society hold a series of informative talks and visits throughout the year. This is an opportunity for members to meet socially and to learn more about the area in which they live. Talks are usually followed by a buffet supper.
The programme for the previous 12 months has included:
- Visit to Dilston Castle and Chapel, with guided tours conducted by the Friends of Historic Dilston
- Visit to the gardens of Whalton Manor, with guided tour by the hostess, Penny Norton.
- Visit to the parish churches of Newbiggin by the Sea, Woodhorn, Ashington and Bothal under the expert guidance of Roger Norris.
- Visit to Coupland Castle , with conducted tours given by hosts, Robin and Fiona Jell, with the opportunity to picnic in the grounds.
- A talk about the proposals to improve presentation of and access to the 'Heart of the City', given by the Very Revd Christopher Dalliston at St Nicholas Cathedral, followed by a buffet supper in the Cathedral Hall.
- 'Wanted Red or Alive': a talk by Gordon Robinson and Lord Redesdale, of the Red Squirrel Protection Partnership, given at Newbrough Town Hall and followed by a buffet supper.
- 'Dilston and the Derwentwaters', a talk by Frances Dickinson of the Friends of Historic Dilston, given at MEA House, Newcastle and followed by a buffet supper.
- Annual December Lunch at Stannington Village Hall with a talk 'Antiques for Pleasure and Profit' given by Arnold Burman.
- A talk about Lord Eldon given by member Marion Anderson at the Mining Institute, Newcastle, followed by buffet supper.
- A guided walk from West Monkseaton to Seaton Sluice with John Laidler.
