Dear Sir
Following the re-organisation of Local Government in Northumberland I am writing to ask on behalf of the Northumberland & Newcastle Society for information about the future management of a number of publicly owned buildings of historic or architectural interest which have been transferred into the ownership of the new County Council from the outgoing District Councils. The following list is by no means exhaustive but covers a number of assets valued by the communities of four towns.

Morpeth: Town Hall
Chantry
Clocktower
Former Registrar’s Building
Hexham: Old Grammar School
Old Gaol, Moot Hall
Queen’s Hall
Alnwick: Old Post Office – Council Meeting Chamber
Northumberland Hall
Hotspur Tower
Berwick upon Tweed: Town Hall

We assume that the County Council will maintain these buildings for public benefit wherever possible: some may already have a viable use which could continue but we have not seen any statement of how these assets will be managed, whether directly by the Council or at one remove by the creation of Trusts. We should be please to understand what provision has been made for their future management. Yours faithfully

Robin Dower
