County Matters

The front cover for this issue is a view of the interior of Seaton Delaval Hall. Built in the early 18th century for Admiral George Delaval by Sir John Vanburgh, who also built Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard, the Hall has had the misfortune to be gutted by fire in 1822 and to remain largely unrestored since then. The gardens were designed in 1947 by James Russell and have been enhanced by Lady Hastings. The nearby Church of Our Lady dates from the early 12th century.

The Delaval line died out in 1814 and the estate passed to the Astley family. Lord Hastings has occupied the West Wing since the 1980s.

The National Trust is seeking to secure the future of this magnificent great house, one of the finest in Northumberland, and has launched a massive fundraising appeal to raise £6.3 million to add to the £6.9 million of their own money. If the money cannot be found, the Hall will be sold privately. The National Trust is also seeking to consult as widely as possible in order to find out how the public would like to see the building and grounds used in the future.
